CONNECTIONS TO THE WATERFRONT
CONNECTING CHINATOWN AND NORTH BEACH TO THE SAN FRANCISCO WATERFRONT
Plap Preparation Studio | Spring 2012 | Group/Individual Project
As part of a project for the Spring 2012 Plan Preparation Studio, our team came up with an integrated “Bayfront Greenway” as a design solution to forge better connections to San Francisco’s northeast waterfront from the neighborhoods of Chinatown and North Beach. My individual proposal for the plan involved activating ground floor facades by retrofitting the garages along Washington St. New loft-style retail/live-work spaces could be accommodated by removing one row of perimeter parking in the Maritime Plaza and Gateway Apartment garages.
Washington Street was a key connecting corridor in our team’s “Bayfront Greenway” plan to connect Chinatown to the waterfront. My design proposal to create a more walkable and vibrant Washington street involved reconfiguring the street by widening sidewalks and raising all but the driving lane to sidewalk level, introducing a dual bike-way, and greening the street by adding permeable pavement, trees, and rain gardens.
