RETROFITTING FREMONT

FREMONT BART STATION AREA PLAN
Advanced Urban Design Studio | Spring 2013 | Independent Project

Our studio was tasked with selecting 9 sites within the existing urban footprint of the Bay Area to accommodate the projected 2 million in population growth by the year 2035, while also addressing the impacts of climate change. I chose to explore retrofitting the area around the Fremont BART Station, which is currently dominated by surface parking lots, low-density development, and wide arterials. My design proposal includes breaking up the area’s super blocks with a more fine-grained street grid, replacing the abundance of surface parking lots with infill development, creating a transit village with green space around the station, and redesigning the wide streets to make them bike and pedestrian-friendly.
