LAKE MERRITT CHANNEL

ADAPTATION & DENSIFICATION

Advanced Urban Design Studio Spring 2013 | Independant Project

The goal for our studio class was to analyze the Bay Area in terms of density, land uses, transportation, open space conservation, and a number of other factors, and come up with nine sites in which to accommodate future growth. One of the selected sites was around the Lake Merritt Channel. The challenge for this site is the future impact of sea level rise. My design proposal involved buffering the channel with wetland areas that could flood, while extending the sea level barrier that is being constructed around the Brooklyn Basin as part of the recently approved Oak to 9th project. I then laid out a plan to densify the area by adding a new street grid, block pattern, and a dense mix of land uses and housing types behind this sea level barrier.
